It has been almost a decade now since Toyota’s last update under the Tundra’s hood. The two engine versions, viz. 4.6-liter and 5.7-liter, are obsolete and costly. Probably, this is the reason why 2018 Toyota Tundra got into the news lately and is rumored to get Toyota’s new 3-liter Inline-6 engine.
Closest in competition to Tundra is the Ford F-150. Chevy Silverado and Nissan Titan are also in line but are somewhat subdued when it comes to sales figures. Currently, F-150 sports a higher strength aluminum body and a twin charged V6 that offers a mighty 365 HP and a 420 lb-ft of torque. Tundra already has got a V8 producing higher 381 HP. While the Tundra’s got an 8-speed transmission, the F-150 has only a 6-speed auto.
2018 Toyota Tundra – Changes
Toyota has paid lesser attention to improving the details of the original Tundra introduced in 2005. The 4th Generation 2018 Toyota Tundra is therefore set to bring a couple of changes. Starting with an advanced engine and fuel injection, rumors say that Toyota has also been working on the outer appearance and driver comfort.
The TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Pro has been adopted to enhance riding experience especially when off-roading and riding rougher terrains. The TRD Pro version offers an improved engine and transmission controls. Release of this trim will be delayed a bit (after the original version) for rigorous testing and provide a reason to that extra bucks being charged for.
Design and Safety
Complained by many to be unattractive and weak, new Toyota Tundra is set to put fingers to silence all and emerge as a full-size heavy-duty pickup truck. In terms of design, 2018 Tundra will sport a new set of grilles and new alloys. Toyota’s going to bring changes in the frame, make it a bit lighter and aerodynamically efficient.
Its cabin is expected to be made in steel and advanced leather upholstery to provide that extra comfort to the driver. New pickup is going to be technologically more advanced regarding the extra features provided. Toyota aims to provide a Mercedes or other higher end luxury vehicle like experience.
Some safety features will be implemented in all Tundra trims: Collision Mitigation and warning system, Radar-based Pedestrian Detection Function, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control.
2018 Toyota Tundra – Engine Specs
As mentioned earlier, the new Tundra will replace the existing engines and put in a new 3-liter twin turbocharged inline-6 diesel, capable of producing 300 HP. Optionally, new model might also get a 5-liter turbocharged V8 Cummins diesel version.
Toyota is likely to implement their D4s technology for better HP and torque. To improve the fuel economy, it has also decided to provide an improved version of the Atkinson system. Since Toyota is currently working in collaboration with BMW, its engines and fuel injection systems are likely to be included in Tundra 2018 as well.
Release Date and Price
Price and release date are still a mystery. However in order to stay competitive in pickup segment new Tundra should be available at dealerships by the end of this year. Its price shouldn’t be higher than $35,000 for the base model.
