The Volkswagen Amarok is one of the oldest in design among the mid-size pickup trucks (also called Utes). It has been on the rampage for quite a long time. The base trim of this VW truck sports a relatively large and spacious cabin and a 2-liter turbocharged engine. However, recently the Amarok has been struggling to remain on the charts and hence the German automaker’s move forward to the 2018 Volkswagen Amarok.
The closest competition, the Ford Ranger is relatively smaller but with a better fuel efficiency and a larger engine. Already crowded with a range of others, Volkswagen isn’t planning to enter the US market for now. The all-new VW Amarok 2018 is all set for a comeback with an improved V6 Diesel engine and extra features for driver comfort.
2018 Volkswagen Amarok: Powertrain Specs
Ever since its launch in 2010, the Amarok has been struggling to make its way to the top of the mid-size tow truck category. The current 2017 version has a 2.0 liters Diesel Turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The new 2018 Volkswagen Amarok will also keep this engines for some trims.
Matched with either a 6 speed or an 8-speed transmission system this turbocharged 2-liter engine produces 178 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque.
The 2018 Volkswagen Amarok will optionally have a new 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6 under the hood. Using this powertrain with its 204 HP, top speed of this truck figures at 120 mph and accelerates 0-60 in less than 8 seconds. RWD will be sold standard, and AWD version is optional.
As compared to Ford Ranger, 2018 Volkswagen Amarok will be slightly bigger along with a larger wheelbase. Maximum payload that this pickup can carry is about 1070 pounds as compared to 900 pounds in Ranger. However, Amarok may still lose out to Ranger when it comes to towing capacity.
Not only is the new pickup powerful regarding engine and transmission, visually it’s going to get a new look. The auto giant is keen on rebuilding it into a muscular structure with a new fascia. A new chrome bumper and uniquely designed LEDs should make it look classier. Updated 3D driver information system and a new steering wheel with modern controls will come as standard.
New Amarok is also keen on excelling other pickups of its class, and even surpassing its own SUVs in terms of interiors. Small but intelligent changes such as square shaped AC vents and new gauges cluster with modern console targets to attract buyers.
Adjustable seat sizes and balanced ergoComfort front seats are aimed to give riding pleasure. The new Park Pilot system backed with a camera, along with radar-based cruise control and automatic brakes should come standard from Volkswagen.
At the current exchange rates, the 2018 Volkswagen Amarok is likely to be priced at $28,850 for the base model. The V6 diesel versions will cost more and the top trim models could go up to $56,000.
