It isn’t a secret that GMC is currently working on the new generation Sierra 1500 pickup truck. Moreover, we caught several testing vehicles in past few months. All prototypes were using heavy camouflage, which prevents us to see all new details. However, we managed to discern some of the new styling cues of the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500.
2019 GMC Sierra 1500: Redesign Changes
Judging by the last spy shots, the new generation truck will receive an evolutionary redesign. The front end seems to hide GMC’s traditional six-sided grille, perhaps a little bit more massive bumper, and a pair of restyled headlights, which will be LED-treated of course. The rear end is also completely wrapped. However, it appears that the pickup might get a totally new tailgate and taillights. Only certain changes in the back are dual rectangular exhaust outlets, which are noticeable already. Of course, GMC won’t forget to redesign the interior, where we expect to see the latest infotainment system and better quality materials.
GMC’s half-ton truck will definitely feature a lighter body in the future. However, they won’t employ as much aluminum as Ford did with the F-150. Instead, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 will feature a mixture of high-strength steel and aluminum, but the steel will be prevailing material. Aside it will be lighter the new model should also improve rigidity. Though we are pretty sure the manufacturer plans to upgrade payload and towing capacities as well.
New Engines and Transmission
The truck manufacturer will offer more options under the hood of the redesigned pickup. The workhorse will probably continue to use the existing 5.3-liter, as well as the most potent 6.2L V-8. However, today’s 4.3L V-6 will be changed with a new turbocharged V6 engine. In addition, the producer will definitely add a diesel option to compete against Ram’s Ecodiesel and upcoming F-150 oil-burner. The option will likely feature Duramax technology. But that’s not all. No, the half-ton pickup will reportedly sport a mild-hybrid system. Plus, most of the options will come mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission, which will additionally boost truck’s fuel economy.
Price and Arrival
Even though they haven’t announced anything, we are pretty sure that the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 will debut early next year at the 2018 Detroit auto show. The base price will have to rise slightly due to a new gearbox and more expensive materials. However, that’s still going to be around $30K.
