GM is a serious player in the pickup truck segment. With its GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado models, it is the biggest competitor to Ford’s trucks. The 2019 Silverado models have already received a new look and some technological changes. Also, the 2019 Sierra 1500 will probably arrive completely overhauled. It will be built on a new T1 platform where more aluminum will be used. Exterior and interior will receive some major changes. The all-new 10-speed transmission will be matched with familiar engine lineup.
Since all the focus of the GM designers and engineers is concentrated on the light-duty truck it is not realistic to expect some major changes related to the HD models. 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is most likely going to be a carry-over of the previous model. It might receive some minor equipment upgrades and additional body color like Red Quartz Tintcoat, and White Frost Tricoat. However, for or some serious changes, it will have to wait in line after the 1500 model.
2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD – Powertrain and Specs
The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD will have the same engine like the previous model. Under the hood will be a petrol Vortec 6.0-liter V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing. It will be paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission which is electronically controlled with overdrive and tow/haul mode. This powertrain produces 360 horsepower @ 5400 rpm and 380 lb-ft of torque @ 4200 rpm.
The stronger option will be GM’s new 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 engine. Matched with the same transmission this mill can deliver 445 horsepower @ 2800 rpm and 910 lb-ft @ 1600 rpm. Its fuel economy is 14/18 mpg, city/highway. With this powerful turbodiesel engine under the bonnet, 2019 Sierra 2500HD can tow up to 18,100 pounds.
2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD – Exterior and Interior
New Sierra HD is a truck made for some serious tasks. Its fully-boxed frame rails and the frame cross parts are made from the high-strength steel. The two-thirds of cab structure is also made from the same material which significantly decreases quiet noise. The HID projector-beam headlights are equipped with GM’s LED lighting for all trims. The models with Duramax diesel will have hood scoop which will help better airflow and contributes to the higher horsepower. The Denali model will arrive on the 20-inch chrome wheels and have more chrome details on the grille and a front bumper. The mirrors will be power-adjustable and have its own heaters.
Inside of the Sierra 2500HD is the most spacious in class. Ergonomy of the front seats are close to perfection. They are made from dual-density seat foam and for some extra money, they can be covered with leather and equipped with heaters. Base models will have a 7.0-inch touchscreen with an upgraded navigation system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. It is also connected to a rearview camera. The audio system with 6-speakers and Bluetooth connectivity are also standard for all models. Denali trim will offer a Bose premium audio system, 8-inch IntelliLink touchscreen and Rear-seat entertainment system.
The current model is not competitive with its safety features to Ford’s Super Duty. Some features as a blind-spot monitor can be implemented into 2019 model. The GM is considering these issues and as a proof of that are the new tire-pressure-monitoring system and backup camera installed in the latest model. Six airbags will come as standard and gadgets like Forward Collision Alert, Safety Alert Seat, Lane Departure Warning and Front and Rear Park Assist will optionally be available with the new model.
Price and Release Date
Since the new 2019 Sierra 2500HD arrives with only minor upgrades it is realistic to expect its arrival by the beginning of this summer. Its starting price will be around $37,000 for the crew-cab model with the petrol engine. This price can go almost double if you decide to purchase full equipped Denali model with Duramax diesel engine.
