The growing popularity and number of the pickup trucks in the global market puts you in front of the hard decision. One has to choose between the Mercedes pickup, new Ford Ranger and Ranger Raptor, VW Amarok, Nissan Navara, etc. But another option worth considering is Mitsubishi’s Triton or in some markets the L200.
This truck earned 5-star safety rating, delivers power, towing and efficiency which tends to the class top and also comes in many forms. This truck is also well-equipped starting from the base version and Mitsubishi continues with improvements each year.
The model arrived the all-new in 2015 and the next-generation will share a lot with the new-generation Navara. Mitsubishi is also the part of the Nissan-Renault alliance and two models will build on the same platform and hardware for the next generation.
However, the full redesign isn’t close and the Triton is now closing to the mid-cycle update. The prototype version was actually spotted recently and the firm disguised the exterior to hide the updates.
The details about the refreshed 2019 Mitsubishi Triton are still scarce but it won’t be a major update for sure. Based on what we can see and reports reveal, Mitsubishi would focus to bring the styling of the model in line with the recent versions. The interior should also come with new materials and the new trim version is also expected. Mitsubishi won’t likely upgrade model’s modern and efficient diesel engine but could improve some suspension components. The electronics should also come with some improvements.
2019 Mitsubishi Triton: Design
The refreshed 2019 Mitsubishi Triton won’t be a major update as we learned from the latest spy shots and reports. The structural upgrades and transition to the new platform Mitsubishi saves for the new generation.
On the other hand, the styling of the upcoming model will bring the most notable changes. The current Triton is already the unique design among the rivals with the robust stance and the largest rear overhang. However, the grille version and the front fascia isn’t also in the line with brand’s latest design.
It seems that the main task for the refreshed Triton is to align the rest of the range in terms of the styling and it easy to recognize the “Dynamic Shield” design elements on model’s front side. The design theme from the latest Pajero Sport and Eclipse Cross compact SUV will be adapted to the ute.
The “Dynamic Shield” front fascia brings the gaping jaw grille and bumper style and new fog light surrounds. That comes in the combination with significantly thinner and sharper headlights.
The prototype version also reveals the resculpted fender flares. The round shape on the current version seems to be replaced with the squared-off design. The rest of the profile looks familiar including the window line, character line and rear overhang.
Other changes should include the new graphic on the taillights, new wheel options and colors.
Inside the cabin, the changes will likely limit to the new material and texture options. The Triton has comfortable and roomy seats and the dash design is also attractive and with well-placed controls. The Double-Cab models also give the good rear seat comfort and the legroom. Mitsubishi will likely add new high-quality materials option and borrow some detail from the top-spec Pajero Sport.
In the equipment range, the new Triton will likely improve its, already 5-star safety rating with the addition of the new advanced safety systems. The Triton offers seven airbags, electronic stability control in all versions and all dual-cabs come with the rearview camera. However, to meet the standards of the class leaders the Triton needs the active safety systems which should be the part of the refresh.
The infotainment system will also get the upgraded features and more standard equipment should be available as well.
2019 Mitsubishi Triton: Powertrains
On the performance front, the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton will carry over the most of the current hardware installation. Mitsubishi will likely tune the suspension with some upgraded components while major improvements will come with the new-gen version and the new Navara-based platform.
Powering the upcoming Triton will be familiar but modern and efficient diesel engine. A 2.4-liter variable geometry turbocharged MIVEC diesel engine debuted with new-generation arrival. A 16-valve common rail intercooled engine has a lightweight design with an aluminum cylinder block. The compression ratio of 15,5:1 puts it also among the most efficient and quietest diesel mills. The engine will return in two states of tune and will make 151 and 178 horsepower. Some reports also suggest the addition of the new 8-speed automatic transmission.
The Triton will also come with the option for the Super Select II 4WD system. The system operates between selectable 2WD and full-time 4WD with center differential lock and low and high range 4WD to provide better control and capability on different weather and surface conditions.
2019 Mitsubishi Triton: Arrival, Price
The refreshed 2019 Mitsubishi Triton will hit the market in the last quarter of the year. Price is yet to be revealed but should stay close to the current levels.
