We have to say that we expect more from the updated version of Volkswagen’s pickup truck. Don’t get us wrong, the 2019 VW Amarok will still be one of the best options in the class, but the changes that the vehicle received are not too impressive. Aside it’s featuring some cosmetic changes inside and out, the attractive workhorse sports a new oil-chugging option. The carmaker has no plan to introduce anything new for the next year, which means that the Amarok Hybrid stays just a mere wish and nothing else.
2019 VW Amarok: Engine and Fuel Economy
The rugged mid-size pickup truck gets motivation from a new and powerful 3.0-liter V-6 TDI engine. The unit has two tunes. The base unit isn’t too impressive with its 161 hp, but the more potent version gets impressive 220 horsepower and staggering 406 pound-feet of torque. The oil-burner is mated to a four-wheel drive, which gets the power via an eight-speed auto transmission. Our testing has shown that the pickup can speed up from 0 to 60 in less than 8 seconds. More precisely, it does that for 7.9 seconds. Fuel economy numbers are not too bad at all. The 2019 Amarok will have to have 9 liters in its tank in order to cross 100 kilometers in combined driving.
Exterior and Interior Styling
Like we said already, the exterior styling is largely carryover. There are some exceptions in the front, but basically, this is pretty much the same truck we know. The carmaker will add slightly reshaped lights and grille in the front and that’s all we get. There are all-new side steps for easier exit and entry of the driver, but the feature is optional only. The rear end hosts a new center step for getting the bed, as well as an optional trailer hitch.
Most of the changes for the 2019 VW Amarok will happen inside. The workhorse will feature a new infotainment with a larger screen. The updated software will include App Connect and Guide & Inform. Plus, the truck gets USB connectivity and Bluetooth. Amarok’s seats will reportedly be significantly better from the existing. The front-end seats will feature 14-way ergoComfort adjustment, fitting every existing size. Volkswagen will add a Park Pilot system, which makes parking significantly easier. It includes a backup camera and the infotainment display. This way you don’t have to watch anywhere except into the screen while you park the pickup truck.
The 2019 VW Amarok will get a carryover price. In Germany, the truck will cost €25,720, which is basically $28,850. Still, this is the price for the base, less potent model.
