2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel: Specs

The battle for supremacy in the best-selling half-ton pickup segment has entered a new chapter with the arrival of all-new GM’s and Ram’s light-duty models for the 2019 model year. The new trucks are more capable and efficient than ever but equipped with the newest tech, safety and premium comfort features as well. The newest generation light-duty Silverado is also larger and lighter than before and among many styles, equipment levels it comes also with many powertrain options.  The truck can be ordered with the turbocharged four-cylinder power or V-6 and V-8 units. However, the newest addition to the range is a 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel among other upgrades for the 2020 model year.

The half-ton 2020 Silverado introduced the Duramax-branded turbodiesel engine to its powertrain inventory alongside newly available Trailering System and adaptive cruise control. The new Duramax turbodiesel engine is a unique design in the class and it claims some class-leading ratings. 

The diesel-powered Silverado 1500 is available in the LT and RST trims but can also be equipped in the premium LTZ and High Country versions.

While its main rivals Ram 1500 and best-selling Ford F-150 rely on the V-6 design, the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel comes with the Duramax-branded 3.0-liter inline-6 engine under the hood. The engine works in the combination with a 10-speed automatic transmission

The Duramax oil-burner is an aluminum-made engine equipped with variable geometry turbocharger and air-to-liquid intercooling. The inline-6 design is said to provide equal performance as the V-6 units but operating smoother, quieter and more balanced.

When it comes to the numbers, a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel unit claims the class-best 277 hp while manages up to 460 lb-ft of torque. The peak torque is available at 1, 500 rpm while reaches 95% of torque at just 1250 rpm. The torque leader in the class is a Ram 1500 equipped with the EcoDiesel engine delivering 480 lb-ft.

How it performs at towing and efficiency:

While the new Duramax turbodiesel engine delivering the class-leading horsepower ratings, it stays behind completion when it comes to towing. The Duramax-powered, light-duty Silverado can tow up to 9,300 pounds which is inferior to competitors. The newest Ram 1500 Diesel is the class leader in towing with the limit at 12, 600 pounds while the Ford F-150 is rated at 11, 400 pounds.

The Silverado 1500 Diesel is, however, better than rivals at efficiency level. The rear-wheel-drive Silverado 1500 Diesel manages up to 33 mpg highway and 23 mpg city. The four-wheel-drive version is rated at 23 mpg city and 29 highways. The Ram 1500 Diesel follows with up to 32 mpg highway while the PowerStroke powered F-150 promises 30 mpg highway.

Following the 2019 model year full redesign and significant structural and visual changes, the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel and other versions feature the same design. The diesel-powered Silverado is available in four trim options including LT, RTS and top-grade LTZ and High Country.

Depending on the chosen trim, the Diesel-powered Silverado gets unique styling elements and interior treatment. The LT version comes with the 17-inch alloy wheels and chrome bumpers. The RST uses 18-inch wheels and black bumpers. The premium LTZ version applies more chrome and it has a chrome grille, door handles and bumpers. The top-grade High Country model comes equipped with the 20-inch wheels, two-tone grille, assist steps, etc.

The interior of the light-duty 2020 Silverado returns in the same form while the equipment list is expanded with adaptive cruise control and New Advanced trailering system with up to 15 cameras.

Every diesel-powered Silverado 1500 gets a modern infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen and smartphone compatibility features including also Wi-Fi. The RTS trim adds also power locking tailgate. The LTZ adds premium features such as leather upholstery, heated front seats, power steering wheel and more. The High Country has wireless charging, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a premium Bose sound system among other equipment.

The 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel is available from the LT trim which starts at $44,125 with the turbocharged petrol engine under the hood. The Duramax Diesel engine is an option in LT and RST trims for $3, 890. The LTZ and High Country versions come equipped with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine by default. Switching to the diesel power demands an additional $2, 495.
