The fully redesigned, fourth generation, half-ton Chevy Silverado had the premiere early in the year and the model made big advancements on all fronts. The light-duty Silverado comes on the new light-weight but a more rigid platform and applied more modern and aerodynamic styling. There are also plenty of new tech and dozens of configurations. The number of powertrain options is six while trim levels count eight. The redesigned Silverado 1500 also offers off-road equipped versions while the company is also working on the new generation heavy-duty Silverado models and they should appear for the 2020 model year.
But despite all brands offer their truck models in a large number of styles and options it seems that it’s never enough. The off-road, high-performance models are very popular but buyers like all sorts of trucks. As the truck craze doesn’t show the signs of slowing, we should expect more truck versions to appear. Chevy might soon be in the focus again and the brand might offer another version of the light-duty Silverado. It wouldn’t be a new concept and reports claim that the firm is considering the return of the performance, street-oriented SS version.
Chevy had this version of the truck based on the light-duty Silverado for several model years since 2003. The Silverado SS had a sportier stance and unique interior combined with upgraded suspension and power plant. The similar recipe Chevy should apply to the new SS version but combined with the new design language. As per unconfirmed reports, the model could appear as the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS.
2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Design
Just like Chevy used the 2003 version of the light-duty Silverado to build the first SS version, the new-generation Silverado 1500 should also be the base for the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS as the reports claim.
So, the new SS should sit on the new, high-strength steel platform which provides better structural rigidity and capability for the fourth-generation Silverado. The new half-ton model is also longer and more comfortable but about 450 pounds lighter than the previous generation. The styling is also more aerodynamic and modern and all should also contribute to the design and capability of the new SS version.
The model should, however, get a few unique styling tweaks. The mode should come with more aggressively sculpted hood and bumpers. The bumpers should have body color finish and the grille should have unique treatment as well. The smoked headlights and taillights should also be the part of the package. To the look should also add large alloy wheels with the performance tires and lower suspension.
Interior, Equipment:
The cabin of the potential Silverado SS should also come with the unique design theme with sportier cues. The difference would make the sports seats with the unique material combination and textures. There should be cloth and leather material options and unique contrasting pieces on the dash and other surfaces. The sports steering wheel and gauges would make a further difference.
On the other hand, the model would arrive with the latest tech features and equipment from the new-gen Silverado. It would also include the active safety systems available in the newest half-ton Silverado.
2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Powertrain
No specific details have been said about the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS powertrain in the reports. The newest light-duty Silverado will offer six powertrain combinations where belong the new turbo-4 and diesel engine and three transmission options.
Chevy again offers the V-6 and pair of V-8 engines from the previous generation but the units come in the improved form. The V-8 engines have improved efficiency measurement and performance. They come with the new 8-speed and 10-speed transmissions. The 5.3-liter V8 makes 355 hp while a 6.2-liter V-8 provides 420 hp.
The previous version of the SS version had a 6.0-liter V-8 engine with 345 hp. The later upgrade added a 5.3-liter supercharged V-8 with 450 horsepower. Chevy might again use one of the two V-8 engines equipped with the supercharger and it could add over 100 hp.
With that, the model would get the performance suspension and brakes. Add to that the performance exhaust system and low-profile, performance tires.
2020 Chevy Silverado SS: Arrival, Price
The 2020 Chevy Silverado SS isn’t out of question but Chevy hasn’t commented on the rumors.
The model would surely get attention but it wouldn’t likely go in large numbers and Chevy might offer a limited number of models. The estimated price of the model if it arrives could rise to the $50,000 level.
need a hi hp engine in a short bed supercharged ok . trying to replace my 2001 gmc.
Imo chevy should really go all out on the newer ss models like ford svt an dodges srt models an overcome being a good ls swap engine
If the 2020 Chevy Silverado SS is released with a single cab, I would surely purchase one.
SINGLE CAB PREFERED
6.2L supercharged Quadcab would be the ticket I need. I miss my 06 SS and drive an 03 Dodge Ram 1500. Please GM, get me in a new SS with some horses in it.
Let’s start with the internals. Thanks to a Letter from Duntoff to management Chevy engines have always been blessed with good rods, pistons, valves, and other internals. Lets go ahead and offer a supercharger, with bigger injectors, bigger tougher fuel pump and a big V-8. You get the idea. With all the torque and HP that will be available you don’t need a 145 speed transmission that is constantly shifting in order to stay in its peak power range. What you do need is a transmissionwith a clutch pak that will take repeated stalled up launchings at 1-2000 rpm at the strip. The F-250 diesel tranny used in the lighting was an excellent choice and mine took over 3000 launches before we had to tear it down and put new clutch paks in it and then off again. A pair of adjustable drag links for strip/street adjustments. A good locking rear end. When I found a Detroit Locker that fit in that 9″ Ford rear end I was able to receive consistant launch times that enabled me to run my number is bracket racing and made me Street Stock Eliminator three years in a row at my local 1/8 mile AHRA track.
In my 4th year when they made me retire I won the first seven races in a row.. I was unbeatable.
