With the underpinning and powertrain which dates back to 2004 and outdated interior, the mid-size Nissan Frontier has long been awaited for the redesign. Still, despite the lack of modern style and sophistication, the venerable Frontier managed to outsell the full-size corporate cousin Titan models, mid-size GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline in 2018. The Frontier falls behind the Chevy Colorado and the class-leader Toyota Tacoma on the sales chart. With the reintroduction of the Ford Ranger and arrival of the Jeep Gladiator, the segment will also become more competitive and Nissan should react as soon as possible to put the Frontier in line with more sophisticated rivals.
Fortunately, Nissan confirmed that the next generation Frontier is well underway and should appear in 2020. Some reports indicate the reveal as the 2020 Nissan Frontier while some suggest the debut in September 2020 and the market launch for the 2021 MY.
Details about the new Frontier are still scarce and the test model hasn’t been spotted on the road which can mean that the launch for the 2021 model year is more probable. What should be a sure bet, the new Frontier will get a new V-6 engine and transmission system and ride on the upgraded platform. Some reports suggest a possible addition of the diesel engine at some point but Nissan hasn’t hinted this possibility. The third generation Frontier should also come with the futuristic exterior look and modern interior and tech equipment.
2020 Nissan Frontier: Design
It has been expected until recently that the new 2020 Nissan Frontier will be based on the underpinning and coil-spring rear suspension setup from the global Navara model but the recent reports suggest a possibly different outcome. Allegedly, the recent reports indicate that the next generation Frontier should continue to exploit the same F-Alpha platform which should undergo serious upgrading process. This is somewhat strange decision if turns out to be true and can be justified with possible try to keep the price of the model as the strong selling point because the new underpinning would increase the price of the model considerably.
On the other hand, the new Frontier should get attention with the futuristic styling as the reports suggest. Still, we don’t have the spy photos of the model and many details about its look but the redesigned Frontier should appear with the sleeker look and new styling components. The new V-motion grille inspired by the design from the brand’s new SUVs and sharper headlights should form the look of the truck’s front end. The profile and body lines should follow the pattern of the global Navara and there are no details about the possible dimension changes.
Inside the cabin, the new generation Frontier will lift the quality of materials to the new level and add more soft-touch surfaces.
The redesigned dash with reconfigured controls and newest infotainment platform will also improve the impression. There will also be improved seat comfort and more standard equipment. Even the base version should come with the large center display while using cloth upholstery, air conditioning, etc. The upper grades will introduce higher quality materials with the availability of leather surfaces and premium comfort and tech features.
The truck will also equip advanced safety systems like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, parking assist, etc.
2020 Nissan Frontier: Powertrains
The current Nissan Frontier relies on a sluggish 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and non-efficient but more powerful 4.0-liter V-6. The truck also possesses ancient five-speed automatic transmission as well as the manual unit.
The 2020 Nissan Frontier should replace the 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine the new 3.0-liter V-6 unit with the power output around 300 horsepower and combined with the new 7-speed automatic transmission. The upgraded suspension and steering system should also improve the drive quality and the fuel efficiency will also be better.
There are also hints that the diesel unit could appear at some point and Nissan might use a 2.3-liter turbodiesel form the global Navara or go with the 2.8-liter Duramax oil burner.
The PRO-4X versions will again be available with the focus on the off-road ride with rear differential lock, off-road tuned shocks, all-terrain tires and more.
2020 Nissan Frontier: Release, Price
The new generation Frontier should appear sometime in 2020 either as the 2020 Nissan Frontier or 2021 model. Nissan will lift the level of sophistication and performance but will likely keep the price close to $20,000 making it again the model’s strong selling point.
