The new round has begone in the HD trucks war with the arrival of the redesigned Ram HD, Chevy and GMC HD and refreshed Ford Super Series. The redesigned trucks deliver greater comfort and a new level of sophistication but what is more important they are more capable and efficient than ever. The new generation Ram HD trucks come with more towing and hauling power than before and that is possible thanks to the extensive structural upgrades and revised powertrains. However, the new trucks are also techier and more comfortable than ever.
The newest three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 can tow almost 20, 000 pounds and that is possible when the reworked Cummins inline-6 turbodiesel engine is under the hood. The greater towing capability provides the Ram 3500 where diesel engine makes 1000 pound-feet of torque and truck can tow up to 35, 100 pounds.
The 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel is a pricy alternative to the HEMI V-8 gasoline-powered version in most trims. The diesel equipped Ram 2500 is available in different cab styles and can be had with various comfort, style and tech upgrades.
2020 Ram 2500 Diesel: Performance
The arrival of the fourth-generation Ram HD made big waves in the industry when the company revealed that upgraded 6.7-liter Cummins I6 engine can make up to 1000 pound-feet of torque. Ram was the first in the industry to reach this magical number but Ford recently announced that improved Power Stroke V-8 diesel is capable of producing up to 1050 pound-feet of torque.
The 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel comes, however, with the detuned version of the mighty Cummins diesel engine. A 6.7-liter Cummins inline-6 turbodiesel makes 370 hp at 2,800 rpm and torque of 850 pound-feet at just 1, 700 rpm. The one-ton Ram 3500 gets the Cummins unit making 400 hp and impressive torque of 1000 pound-feet. The Corporate 68RFE 6-speed automatic transmission is used in both cases. The upgraded, multi-range electronically controlled transmission delivers great responsiveness with low noise and vibration.
Equipped with the turbodiesel engine, the Ram 2500 can tow up to 19, 780 pounds or carry up to 3, 260 pounds in the cargo bed. The Ram 3500 with the engine tuned to produce up to 1000 pound-feet of torque has a towing limit of 35, 100 pounds.
How it rates against the rivals:
The recently redesigned Chevy Silverado 2500 comes with the capable 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 turbodiesel engine and smooth Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevy’s diesel engine makes up to 445 hp and peak torque of 910 pound-feet at just 1, 600 rpm. The three-quarter-ton Silverado can tow up to 18, 510 pounds.
Ford recently revealed the refreshed F-Super Series and dethroned Ram’s turbodiesel engine. Ford’s new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbodiesel produces 475 hp and class-leading 1050 pound-feet of torque. Ford also said that F-450 will tow up to 37, 000 pounds.
2020 Ram 2500 Diesel: Design
The fifth-generation Ram 2500 sits on the high-tensile-steel-intensive chassis while aluminum is used for some body panels. The re-engineered chassis is made from 98.5 percent high-tensile steel and combined with aluminum panels the model is about 143 pounds lighter than the previous generation. The strengthened chassis combined with the improved powertrains provide significantly better towing and hauling.
From the visual perspective, the Ram 2500 looks modern and sleeker than the previous iteration version. Ram ditched the crosshair grille style for the new generation and applies the more modern design. The truck comes also with the new headlights available in three designs. Available are also premium LED taillamps and models also offer various wheel sizes and designs starting from 17-inch units.
The cabin of the 2020 Ram 2500 Diesel is near identical to the light-duty Ram 1500. The model offers various material options and color themes. There are also easy-to-use controls and different touchscreen options. The model is also available with a massive 12.0-inch center display. Buyers can also pick attractive trim accents including real wood and metal inserts.
The truck can also be equipped with an array of active safety systems. Some of the systems are adaptive cruise control with stop, adaptive lighting system, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking assist, etc.
