Ram heavy-duty trucks are all about the loading and towing but it is also a good thing to have the off-road ready version these days as more buyers want the truck capable of towing heavy loads but also to go beyond the paved roads. Ram 2500-based Power Wagon version has more talent for the off-roading thanks to the upgraded suspension and drivetrain and unique styling and interior touches make it also appealing.
Ram is now making the final touches on the new-generation Ram HD models and recently fully undisguised versions were spotted testing on the road. The 2020 Ram Power Wagon has also revealed the new look and some of its hardware while more details should appear during the debut which should happen early 2019.
The new off-road ready Ram 2500 and other versions will follow the footsteps of the light-duty Ram 1500 which made a big boom in the market early this year. The trucks will share similar styling and interior design and offer similar tech and convince features. The HD trucks should return with the familiar engine options with expected improvements in the performance and efficiency. The Power Wagon version will build on that with the upgraded underpinning and equipment.
2020 Ram Power Wagon: Design
Ram is still keeping us in the dark with no specs revealed about the new Ram HD but the uncovered prototypes spotted on the roads show us the look of the new models. Still, we should expect similar structural and design upgrades on HD models as we saw on the half-ton Ram 1500. So, more high-tensile steel in the chassis should improve the rigidity and the mixed-materials strategy for the body design should provide reduced overall weight and better performance.
On the other hand, we know already how the new Ram Power Wagon will look thanks to the recent spy shots. Obviously, the Ram 2500 off-road will borrow heavily from the Ram 1500 Rebel in terms of styling including the grille version. The new LED headlights and taillights also have the similar shape as on the smaller version and the Power Wagon gets again the smoked light housings.
The new version comes also with the new bumpers and we can detect sensors for the blind-spot monitors in the rear lights. The truck will also get the factory-built winch and tow hooks.
The shape of the truck is similar to the current version but the model seems to have a more muscular hood and sculpted tailgate. The lifted suspension and broad wheel arches combined with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires will add to model’s capability and presence.
As for the interior design, the new Ram HD models should arrive with the nearly identical design as the light-duty Ram. The Power Wagon will also adopt similar interior design and layout. There will likely be an 8.4-inch touchscreen-based Uconnect 4 infotainment system while the class largest 12.0-inch display will likely be available.
The Power Wagon will also get a unique trim accents and padding and the brand will likely offer this version as the trim option or the upgrade package on the Tradesman trim. Expect also the Ram 2500 off-road in the crew cab style only and with the short cargo bed.
2020 Ram Power Wagon: Powertrain
As for what will power the new 2020 Ram Power Wagon, we should expect the same range of the engines as in the current version. The outgoing Power Wagon is available with the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 only. The engine, in the current form, coupled with the six-speed automatic gearbox provides 410 hp and torque of 429 lb-ft. The new version of the engine is expected with the improved performance and efficiency.
On the other hand, the sources claim that Ram could offer a 6.7-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel engine with the new generation Power Wagon as well. The new 8-speed automatic transmission should also appear and provide power and efficiency benefits as well.
The Power Wagon will further boost its off-road credibility with the electronically locking differentials, Bilstein dampers, skid plates, all-terrain tires, improved ride height and wheel articulation, etc.
2020 Ram Power Wagon: Release, Price
The new 2020 Ram Power Wagon should make the premiere at the 2019 North American Auto Show. Then we will know more details and price. The off-road adventure with the new Power Wagon should cost around $55, 000.
