The arrival of many new and redesigned pickup models prove that segment continues to grow and brands are increasingly investing in the money-making truck industry. And while most of the truck sales are going on the full-size models, the mid-size class will also grow in the future. The re-launch of the Ford Ranger and debut of Jeep Gladiator will challenge the current class leaders and the chief position in class has been the hands of the reliable Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma outsells GM’s duo of mid-size trucks with 245, 659 sold units while combined sales of Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon was 168,344 examples in 2018.
In order to stay in line with the increasingly competitive market, Toyota refreshed the mid-size Tacoma and it will go on sale as the 2020 version. Unfortunately, the updated model returns with the unchanged mechanics and capability except the TRD-branded models come with some tweaks and new tech. Toyota introduced also some subtle styling changes and each version gets new features. The good news is, however, that Toyota addressed some issues and the new truck comes finally with the upgraded infotainment system and power driver seat. The 2020 Toyota Tacoma offers also the standard suite of active safety tech.
2020 Toyota Tacoma: Design
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma comes as the refreshed model but the exterior changes are not so obvious. The model returns in the extended and crew cab forms and with two bed options for the more comfortable version. The list of trims incudes SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-road, TRD Pro and Limited versions.
The model continues to be recognizable by its huge, hexagonal grille and masculine body. The grille style has been altered for most versions and models come also with refreshed lights and new wheel design. The SR version gets tweaked grille and headlight design and offers LED cargo bed light as an option. The SR5 enters the market with the new grille and 16-inch wheel design plus darker taillights. The TRD Sport will use new 17-inch wheels combined with tweaked grille style and chrome taillight pieces. This trim will also offer standard LED fog lights and optional DRLs and bed lights. The TRD Off-road gets similar upgrades as the previous trim but adds some off-road goodies.
The TRD Pro has new 4 pounds lighter 16-inch wheels and standard LED headlights, fog lights, DRLs, and dark housing taillights. The model remains in the same shape and size.
The updated Toyota Tacoma brings some important upgrades inside the cabin and tech equipment.
The Tacoma has got a 10-way power driver seat in the SR5 version and upper grades. The upgraded infotainment system comes with a 7-inch touchscreen in the base version and higher trims get an 8-inch interface. The new infotainment platform supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto as well as Amazon Alexa. There is also new seat fabric in the SR5 model and retractable moonroof in the TRD Off-road trim.
The active safety systems are shared in all versions. The safety range includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The TRD Sport and upper trims get also a surround view camera system.
2020 Toyota Tacoma: Performance
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma enters the new model year with the same engine options and transmissions. The TRD Off-road version gets an optional Multi-Terrain Monitor System which provides the picture of the terrain under the truck. This version improves the off-radio capability with the standard rear locking differential, off-road modes, Bilstein shocks, hill start assist and crawl control. The TRD Pro has also the new Terrain Monitoring system and upgraded shocks and springs.
The base 2.7-liter engine comes in the combination with the six-speed automatic transmission and provides 159 hp and torque of 180 pound-feet. Most buyers will find a 3.5-liter V-6 engine more adequate. This engine uses both 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox. The output is rated at 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The Tacoma will provide both rear- and four-wheel drive with the maximum towing capability of 6, 800 pounds.

Toyota hasn’t yet talked about the price of the refreshed 2020 Toyota Tacoma. The model will go on sale later in the year. Expect slightly increased price in the range between $26,000-36,000.
