Picking the mid-size pickup truck isn’t an easy task these days. An increasing number of nameplates and numerous options available with already running models make the decision harder. The number of mid-size offerings is growing in the US as buyers more often picking them instead of the best-selling full-size versions. The mid-size versions enjoying greater popularity outside the US where buyers can choose between more options.
Among many options available with increasing sophistication and performance, the VW Amarok remains one of the best picks despite it has been on the road for many years in this generation. Refreshed for the 2017 model year, equipped with powerful and efficient V-6 turbodiesel and with the near car-like interior, the Amarok continues to fare well against better equipped and faster-selling Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. The Amarok gets high scores for the precise steering and composed ride while its turbo-6 diesel available in different outputs is also the model’s strong side.
As for the 2020 VW Amarok and future upgrades, VW commented recently that there won’t be significant changes until the arrival of the next-generation version. VW revealed that next-generation Amarok will be the product of the joint venture with global Ford and the redesigned Amarok will be based on the new-gen, global Ranger. The new Amarok will come around 2022 and joint investment will increase the effectiveness in implementing new technologies and reduce production cost.
In the meantime, the 2020 Amarok returns mostly unchanged with the new trim added. The Black Edition version adds many black-themed styling elements as the name suggests.
2020 VW Amarok: Design
Despite being many years on the road in the same form, the VW Amarok still looks good. VW’s design language has changed in the meantime but not significantly enough to make the Amarok’s styling looks dated.
The 2020 VW Amarok will again repeat the same form the model features since the 2017-year refresh. The next-generation Amarok will come based on the Ford Ranger platform and with the new styling. The 2020 version will, however, offer the new Black Edition trim with dark-themed styling.
The new version will come with a dominant black outfit with the unique 20-inch alloy wheels, specific rear bumper, and new side steps. The model gets also revised underbody panels and a black styling bar.
Inside the cabin, the Amarok is almost like the SUV. The model is comfortable and passenger-friendly. It comes again in the dual-cab form only and there is enough comfort for passengers in both rows. The model has a nice dash with easy-to-use controls.
The new Black Edition version comes with a few unique cabin details including black headliner, Nappa leather upholstery, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, and gloss black trim insert on the dash. This version includes also a 6.5-inch touchscreen interface, sat-nav, automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, etc.
The Amarok is also available with the premium upholstery, 14-way power seats, DAB radio, heated seats, dual-zone climate control and more.
2020 VW Amarok: Performance
On the performance front, the 2020 VW Amarok continues to rely on the proven 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel engine. This unit has also multiple applications in Audi and Porsche models. The Amarok comes with various power and torque outputs while the 8-speed automatic transmission, as well as the 4Motion all-wheel drive, are the part of every application.
A smooth and efficient 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel makes 254 hp and 580 Nm of torque in the most capable version where an additional 14 hp (total 200kW) are available with the overboost. There are also variants with different outputs including 161 and 201 hp.
The Amarok overpowers the class rivals and only the Mercedes X-Class 350d comes close with 190kW/550Nm. The Ford Ranger’s 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel makes 157 kW and 500 Nm of torque.
The Amarok is also a good performer on the road thanks to the balanced handling and precise steering. The 4Motion all-wheel drive provides also the all-weather and rugged terrain capability. The Amarok can also tow up to 3, 500 kg.
