The full-size trucks continue to be perennial best-sellers in the US and there are no signs that trend would change soon. Buyers can choose between various sizes, configurations and equipment levels. There is also light- and heavy-duty models depending on the towing and payload capability. When buyers need a level-up towing and payload capacity over the best-selling light-duty trucks the ¾ ton model should be the choice. The GMC Sierra 2500 HD is a mechanical twin with the Chevy Silverado HD but it offers several unique design solutions and a more sophisticated and premium cabin. The truck can also be had with the mighty turbodiesel engine. The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel maximizes the towing capability and can be had in every trim.

The GMC 2500 HD enters the new model year after the last year thorough redesign and there are just a few changes. The model returns with the same trim order but there are some changes in the equipment availability. The model introduces also new color and wheel options. Following the last year’s full redesign, the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel and other versions returns without any significant structural or visual upgrade.

The diesel-powered Sierra 2500 HD is available in every trim option. Depending on the trim version the model gets specific grille finish, styling elements and wheels. The base model has a blacked-out grille mixed with the standard 17-inch steel wheels and metallic bumpers. The SLE version goes on sale with the chrome bumper and grille and standard alloy wheels.

The off-road-ready AT4 gets dark chrome trim, red tow hooks, specific black-trimmed grille, lifted suspension, standard 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, additional skid plates and more.

The top-grade Denali uses unique grille design, body-color bumpers, attractive 20-inch wheels and more premium touches.  

For the new model year, the model gets three new colors including Ebony Twilight Metallic, Cayenne Red Tintcoat and Hunter Metallic. The SLE trim gained standard MultiPro tailgate. New 18- and 20-inch wheel styles are also available.

Interior, Equipment:

The cabin of the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel returns in the same form. The model should get redesigned interior for the 2023 season as the reports indicate.

The GMC Sierra 2500 provides plenty of leg- and headroom in all rows and comes with soft materials I upper grades. It has also logically arranged controls and can be had premium comfort and tech features.

For the new model year, the model gets wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. There is also a new rearview dimming mirror. SiriusXM is also available in the base trim for the new model year. The SLE trim deleted bucked seats. There are also some changes in the package options and equipment availability.

The base Sierra skips power seats and an 8-inch touchscreen but comes with Apple Car Playa and Android Auto. The SLE version includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, color info display, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and there are numerous options for upgrade.

The Sierra SLT has power and heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery and more.

The top-grade Denali offers heated and ventilated seats, upgraded climate controls, premium leather upholstery, and much more.

The Sierra HD can also be had with active safety systems but they are no standard equipment. The truck can be equipped with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, 15 cameras, etc.

2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel: Performance, Towing

The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel returns with the same diesel unit under the hood which is a pricey option over the base 6.6-liter V-8 gasoline engine.

A turbodiesel engine is available on every trim for about $9000 over the standard engine. A 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-6 engine is good for 445 hp and torque of 910 lb-ft. Peak torque is available from just 1600 rpm.  The engine comes in a pair with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. GMC offers also this transmission with the integrated Power Take-off.

The diesel-powered Sierra 2500 can tow up 18, 510 pounds and it requires Regular Cab Long Bed 2WD model with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch.

The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Diesel goes on sale in the coming months. The base Sierra HD with the Duramax turbodiesel engine will be available from about $45, 500.
