The full-size pickup trucks continue to outsell everything on the roads in the US but the mid-size truck market share is also growing in recent years. The truck makers are also increasing the number of options and styles and the off-road-oriented versions are also in focus. The brands offered also several on-road-focused versions in the past but due to low demand, these versions were discontinued. With the trucks’ continuous popularity growth reports and rumors are also circulating that on-road, performance versions might appear again. The high-performance 2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R is one of the models that has been a matter of speculation but Chevy and Ford might also reintroduce their performance-oriented nameplates.
Honda hasn’t yet commented on the speculations about the eventual arrival of the Ridgeline Type R and the prototype version hasn’t also been spotted on the roads to suggest that the brand has the high-performance Ridgeline in mind.
On the other hand, speculations and reports claim that a Type R-treated Ridgeline would get similar upgrades as the Civic Type R. The model would come with the reinforced chassis, sport-tuned suspension, more potent powertrain, more aggressive styling and sport-style cabin.
2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R: Design
The regular 2021 Ridgeline should come with similar styling upgrades as the recently refreshed Pilot SUV. The refreshed model should arrive with the tweaked grille and new headlights. The model should also offer new wheel and color options.
The 2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R should receive similar styling and performance upgrades as applied to the Civic Type R. The front section of the model should switch to the blacked-out, red-badged grille version. The lower front fascia should get a sportier bumper version with larger air intakes.
The performance-oriented Ridgeline should also get specific 20-inch wheels mixed with Brembo-branded brakes. The model would also get specific color patterns and options if it enters production.
The Pilot-based Honda Ridgeline has a car-like cabin and it is roomier than rival crew cab versions.
The Honda Ridgeline Type R should come with a sports-style in-cab design inspired by the Civic Type R as the rumors suggest. The model should add sports bucket seats with red and black suede padding. There should also be red stitching on the dash, center console and door panels. The model should also get additional trim inserts on the dash and sport-stye steering wheel.
The Ridgeline Type R should also get the brand’s newest infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen. The equipment should also include navigation, premium sound system and more. Honda Sensing suite would also be standard equipment if the model arrives. The package covers systems such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, etc.
2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R: Performance
As the reports claim, the 2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R should go on sale with multiple drivetrain and engine upgrades.
The model should benefit from the significant chassis and suspension upgrades. The Ridgeline Type R would seat lower to the ground and come with the on-road optimized sports suspension. There will also be 20-inch wheels with performance tires and Brembo brakes with red calipers.
Under the hood of the high-performance Ridgeline could be a 2.0-liter intercooled and turbocharged four-cylinder engine sourced from the Civic Type R as some reports claim. This engine is good for 306 hp and torque of 295 lb-ft in the Civic-applied version but could be tuned to produce more hp for possible application in the Ridgeline Type R. Some reports suggest that a turbocharged V-6 engine might be used with power above 350 hp. The model would also get remapped 9-speed automatic transmission.
The regular Ridgeline will again employ a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission. The engine makes 280 hp and torque of 262 lb-ft. Honda promised electrification of its entire light-truck range and the Ridgeline should get a hybrid powertrain option but it’s not certain it would happen for the 2021 season.
2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R: Release, Price
The regular Honda Ridgeline should cost from about $34, 000. The 2021 Honda Ridgeline Type R could be priced at about $50, 000 as the reports suggest. However, without any solid evidence, caught prototype, or hint from Honda, the arrival of the Ridgeline Type R is very uncertain.
