Jeep brings the diesel power to the Gladiator’s range for the model’s second market year. The upcoming 2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel packs a familiar EcoDiesel V-6 engine under the hood mixed with the recalibrated 8-speed automatic transmission. The new engine will boost the torque, efficiency and range over the base V-6 petrol engine for $6000.
The turbodiesel unit will appear on the base Sport, Overland and hardcore Rubicon models. The Gladiator Diesel beats diesel-powered rivals in both power and torque but Jeep hasn’t revealed its towing limit and fuel economy.
The diesel-powered Gladiator will go on sale this fall with the starting price just above $41, 000. The Jeep Gladiator is a more rugged alternative to other mid-size pickup trucks including the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, etc.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel: Design
The new 2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel goes on with the same styling as the current version except for several specific details. The diesel-powered Gladiator sports the brand’s timeless styling inherited from the Wrangler SUV.
Upfront is a signature seven-slot grille flanked by the round headlights. The model has also chunky fenders like its SUV twin and there are also removable doors, windshield and tops. Behind the doors with the exposed hinges is the 5-foot cargo bed with the conventional tailgate and Wrangler-like taillights.
The Gladiator diesel comes in three trim options and each version gets specific exterior details in addition to the appropriate badging and unique wheels.
The range starts with the base Sport trim which comes on the 17-inch steel wheels with all-season tires and black bumps and fenders. The Overland model gets 18-inch alloy wheels, black bumpers, body-color fenders and side steps. The off-road-master Rubicon has also black bumpers and fender flares but combined with the lifted suspension, massive 33-inch all-terrain wheels and unique badging.
The 2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel has the Wrangler-like cabin with the vertical dash, various display options and signature round air vents. The model has a good driving position with excellent visibility and supportive seats.
There are also various material options. The model can be equipped with several premium comfort features and modern tech and safety systems.
The base Sport model comes with the manual door locks and mirrors, a rearview camera, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, eight speakers, a 5-inch center display, voice control capability, Bluetooth, etc.
The Gladiator Overland gets automatic headlights, LED ambient lighting, upgraded 7-inch infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, additional USB ports and leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The hardcore Rubicon adds off-road goodies such as the locking front and rear differentials, increased clearance, 33-inch all-terrain tires, additional body protection, etc.
2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel: Performance
The current Gladiator is on sale with a long-living 3.6-liter V-6 engine. It is good for 285 hp and torque of 260 lb-ft. The engine works in pair with the standard six-speed manual transmission while the 8-speed automatic is optional. All versions get the all-wheel drive by default.
The upcoming 2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel employs a familiar 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 turbodiesel engine. This engine is also under the hood of the Wrangler SUV and full-size Ram 1500 pickup truck. The engine makes 260 hp and torque of 442 lb-ft. A pair with the engine is a 8-speed automatic transmission optimized for the low-end torque.
Jeep hasn’t talked yet about the diesel-powered Gladiator fuel efficiency and towing capability. The EcoDiesel-powered Wrangler manages 22 mpg city, 29 highway and 25 mpg combined. The diesel-powered Chevy Colorado returns 23 mpg combined while the GMC Canyon manages 22 mpg combined. The petrol-powered Gladiator can tow up to 7, 650 pounds.
The Jeep Gladiator employs heavy-duty Dana 44 solid axles both in front and rear in all versions. Coil springs are on all four corners. The Sport and Overland uses a part-time transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. The Rubicon has a transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range ratio.

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator Diesel goes on sale in the third quarter of the year. The price range starts from $41, 040. The Overland with the diesel engine under the hood will be available from $47, 890. The EcoDiesel-powered Rubicon will demand $51, 370.
