With the recent launch of the Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator JT, buyers have a new option in the growing mid-size pickup truck class, and we are speaking about one of the options with a strong personality, off-road and towing capability. The Gladiator is actually a Wrangler Unlimited with the elongated wheelbase, five-foot cargo bed and special purpose. Like the Wrangler, the model comes with the removable doors and top and in various trim options with modern tech and safety equipment. The part of the deal is also a serious off-road capability that can be amplified with the Rubicon-treatment like in the SUV version.
The Jeep Gladiator started the journey for the 2019 model year and buyers should not expect any significant upgrade for the 2021 season. Jeep might expand the equipment list of the base trim with new features and add new color options. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator will also come with the revised equipment availability in upper trims. There could also be a new special edition version. There are no signs that a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will join the powertrain range.
2021 Jeep Gladiator: Design
The new-generation Jeep Gladiator shares the DNA with the four-door Wrangler SUV but it rides on the 18-inch longer wheelbase in order to open a room for the 5-foot cargo bed which also needed a 12-inch rear overhang.
The Gladiator has also the same visual identity as the fourth-generation Wrangler. Seen from the facial point it can be mistaken as the Jeep Wrangler. The front section of the model is defined with the Jeep’s common seven-slot grille mixed with the round headlights.
The chunky fenders are also present as in the Wrangler as well as the exposed door handles and removable top. The model starts with the black cloth top with the optional, black, or body color removable hardtops.
The 2021 Jeep Gladiator will return in the same form but there should be new color and wheel patterns at disposal. Possibly a new special edition version with the unique styling touches will surprise Gladiator lovers.
The cabin of the next 2021 Jeep Gladiator will also return in the same form. There could be more standard equipment and a few new options.
The Gladiator uses the same upright dash design as the Wrangler and it has easy to use controls. The cabin is reasonably quiet and the seats are supportive. There is also ample rear-seat comfort. The driving position is also good as well as visibility.
At the equipment level, the base Gladiator comes with a tilt-and-telescopic-steering wheel, voice control capability, 8 speakers, a rearview camera, etc. The base Gladiator will likely stay with the 5-inch display.
The mid-range versions will get a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, automatic climate control, advanced driver aids, upgraded upholstery, etc.
The upper grades will open possibilities for the leather upholstery. Also, a premium Alpine sound system, an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, will be the options.
2021 Jeep Gladiator: Performance
There are no signs that a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine available with the Wrangler SUV will appear in the powertrain range of the next Gladiator for the new model year. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator will likely return with the Pentastar V-6 petrol and V-6 turbodiesel diesel engines.
A 3.6-liter V-6 should remain standard with the 6-speed manual transmission with the 8-speed automatic transmission available as an option. The engine makes 285 hp and torque of 260 lb-ft.
Buyers can opt for the 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine good for 260 hp and torque of 442 lb-ft. The engine comes with the standard 8-speed automatic transmission.
Every Jeep Gladiator benefits from the capable, part-time four-wheel-drive system. The Rubicon version builds its extreme off-road capability with the upgraded transfer case, locking front and rear differentials, Fox shocks, 33-inch all-terrain tires, upgraded underbody protection, increased clearance and more.
The Gladiator can tow up to 7, 650 pounds in its most capable configuration or 4, 000 pounds in standard versions.
2021 Jeep Gladiator: Release, Price
The next 2021 Jeep Gladiator should cost from about $34, 000 when goes on sale later in the year. The feature-loaded Gladiator will be prized in the mid-$40, 000s.
The Gladiator finished its initial market year with 40, 047 sold units since its May debut.
